He married Ann Loan on 7 September 1855, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 7 daughters. He died on 20 December 1902, in Dunedin, New Zealand, at the age of 68, and was buried in Dunedin, New Zealand.
