When Anna Katharina Ramsauer was born on 22 July 1789, in Herisau, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland, her father, Lorenz Ramsauer, was 25 and her mother, Anna Katharina Stauner, was 20. She married Lorenz Merz on 25 February 1812. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 6 daughters. She died on 21 May 1854, in Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland, at the age of 64, and was buried in Herisau, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland.

Among people with a classical education, it has from time to time been associated with Virgil's Aeneid, where it is borne by the sister of Dido , Queen of Carthage. This Phoenician name may ultimately be of Semitic origin, and thus related to the biblical Anne. However, the connection, if it exists, is indirect rather than direct.
