When William Abney was born on 8 August 1772, in Augusta, Virginia, United States, his father, John Key Abney Sr, was 28 and his mother, Isabella Van Lear, was 21. He married Elizabeth Parks McClanahan on 23 December 1794, in Augusta, Virginia, United States. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 6 daughters. He died on 25 August 1828, in his hometown, at the age of 56.
