1878 · Collapse of the City of Glasgow Bank.

Age 0

Because of a discovery of a £7,000 deficit, City of Glasgow Bank halted operations from November to December 1877. After 10 months after reopening, the bank’s directors announced the bank, itself, had filed bankruptcy. The closure showed a net liability of over £6 million. The bank was so successful with telling people that it wasn’t in error, that the Bank's shares were selling for more than double of what they were actually worth. The bank’s directors were arrested and tried at the High Court. All were found guilty and sentenced to terms of imprisonment. Many Glasgow businesses failed as a result of the bankruptcy and shareholders were called to replenish the bank's losses. One shareholder argued that he had become a shareholder unknowing the fraudulent actions of the bank. Wide effects of the collapse have been seen in limited growth in liability and extensive problems with temporary banking liquidity.

1913 · Leith dockers strike 1913

Age 35

The Leith dockers strike was a strike that brought the town of Leith to a standstill after dock workers demanded an increase in pay, better working conditions, and shorter hours. The strike had an effect on the local community by not allowing trade to flow smoothly out of the docks. There totaled around 4,600 people a part of the strikes and riots but it ended near the middle of August with no demands met. since then two more strikes would happen at the same location, once in 1983 and, most recently, in 1989.

Name Meaning

Scottish and English: of Norman origin, a habitational name from Saint-Clair-sur-Elle (Manche), so called from the dedication of its church to Saint Clarus (see Clare 3).

Americanized form of some similar (like-sounding) Jewish surname.

History: The Scottish family Sinclair (see 1 above) came to southern Scotland in the twelfth century from Huntingdonshire with the de Morvilles. Descendants of these Sinclairs became earls of Caithness in the 15th century. The frequency of the surname in Caithness and Orkney is largely due to the adoption by tenants of the name of their overlord.
