1877 · First National Strike in U.S. Begins In Pittsburgh Against Pennsylvania Railroad

Coming out of an economic crisis, everyone was worried when cuts started happening in the railroad. They went on what would the great railroad strike of 1877.

1881 · The Assassination of James Garfield

Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.

Americanized form of Dutch Op de Graef or Op den Graef: topographic name for someone who lived by a channel or watercourse, from Dutch op ‘beside’ + de ‘the’ + graf (Middle Dutch grave) ‘stream, channel, watercourse’.
