1847 · Hollywood Cemetery Established

Hollywood Cemetery was established in 1847 in Richmond Virginia. This is where Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler are buried. During the Civil War it became the largest military interments and a large section dedicated to military burials. Jefferson Davis a well known Confederate is also buried here. Many other notable people are also buried here.

Arlington Cemetery is a military cemetery. It was originally a plantation owned by George Washington Parke Custis. This is the location of Robert E. Lee, 16,000 Civil War soldiers, William Howard Taft, John, Jackie, Robert, and Edward Kennedy. The tomb of the unknown soldier is also located here it was dedicated on November 11, 1921. It contains the remains of those soldiers unknown from WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.

Name Meaning

Altered form of French Agé (see Age ) or, alternatively, of Desage .

History: This surname was brought to VA in 1690 by the Huguenot Mathieu-Isaac Agee (c. 1670–1761), a native of Nantes, who left France for the Netherlands in 1688, joined the forces of William of Orange during the latter's seizure of the throne of England from the Catholic James II, and in 1690 was granted a passage to VA and lands at Manakin, a Huguenot settlement founded in 1700–01. Two of his three sons had a total of 24 children. He is listed in the (US) National Huguenot Society's register of qualified Huguenot ancestors and also in the similar registers of the Huguenot Society of America and of the Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin. His original surname was either Agé (see Age ) or Desage.
