    On June 1, 1792, Kentucky became the 15th state. It was the first state west of the Appalachian Mountains

    1796 · Wilderness Road Opens to Wagons

    Age 21

    In 1796, the Wilderness Road opened up for wagon use. The route was used by colonial and early settlers to reach Kentucky from the East. It started in Virginia, and went southward to Tennessee and then went north to Kentucky. The main danger of this route was Native American attacks.

    Name Meaning

    Americanized form of German Hauser or its Dutch equivalents Huijser, Huiser and Huizer.

    English (Middlesex): perhaps an occupational name from Middle English housere ‘builder’, though no medieval bearers have been found, and so in Britain the name may alternatively be exclusively of German and Jewish (Ashkenazic) origin (see Hauser , compare 1 above).
