In the summer of 1848, when the first train roared into what is now Lawton at the remarkable speed of 18 miles per hour, a new depot awaited its arrival. Nathan Lawton, who owned the land where the town would spring up, had given 10 acres for the use of the railroad. The train station was initially called Paw Paw, but in 1851, the new postmaster, Andrew Longstreet, named the post office (and thus the settlement) Lawton.

1854 · Creation of the Republican Party

A debate continues over the location of the creation of the Republican Party. Some sources claim the party was formed in Ripon, Wisconsin, on February 28, 1854. Others claim the first meeting of the Republican Party took place in Jackson, Michigan, on July 6, 1854, where the Republican Party was officially organized. Over 1,000 people were present and candidates were selected for the party, thus making it the first Republican convention.
