When Niklaus Aeschlimann was born on 11 September 1796, in Rüegsau, Bern, Switzerland, his father, Niklas Aeschlimann, was 40 and his mother, Christina Hermann, was 36. He married Rosina Lanz Aeschlimann on 26 June 1819. They were the parents of at least 1 daughter. He died on 22 May 1823, at the age of 26.

Americanized form of Swiss German Aeschlimann: topographic name for someone who lived near a (small) ash tree or ash wood, from Esche (Old High German asc) ‘ash’ + the diminutive suffix -li + -mann ‘man’, or perhaps a derivative of Öschli, a pet form of a vernacular form of the personal name Oswald .
