When Uili Fonoti Mata'u was born on 8 June 1910, in Fogasavaii, Satupa'itea, Savai'i, Samoa, his father, Tolouli Mata'u, was 17 and his mother, Simaota Lauafia, was 25. He married Tapena Saimasina Su'a Tuipelehake in 1940. They were the parents of at least 2 sons. He died about 1990, at the age of 81.
