Sarah Ann Norris was born in February 1862, in Yadkin, North Carolina, United States as the daughter of Shade Norris and Julia Moore. She married Jessie Osborne on 17 March 1888, in Alleghany, North Carolina, United States. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 4 daughters. She lived in Elk Creek, Grayson, Virginia, United States in 1920 and Old Town District, Grayson, Virginia, United States in 1940. She died on 1 April 1923, in Oldtown, Grayson, Virginia, United States, at the age of 61, and was buried in Rock Creek Church Cemetery, Independence, Grayson, Virginia, United States.

Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.
