    1949 · 1950s Texas Drought

    Age 1

    One of most intense, costly, and devastating droughts ever recorded in the state of Texas. The entire state was in a state of drought by the summer of 1951. Less than 30-50% of the normal rainfall was received during this period. The state was plagued with dust storms similar to those from the infamous Dust Bowl. The drought ended in a destructive manner throughout 1957; storms, hail, tornadoes, and deadly floods.

    1952 · Uranium in Moab

    Age 4

    Uranium mining in Utah has a history going back more than 100 years but, it started as a byproduct of vanadium mining. With the development of Nuclear Weapons, Utah saw a uranium boom in the late 1940s and early 1950s, but uranium mining declined near the end of the Cold War. Currently Uranium is still being mined but just a small amount for power plants and for research.

    1964 · Canyon lands National Park

    Age 16

    In the early 1950s, Bates Wilson began exploring an area to the southwest of Moab and began advocating the land for the establishment of a new national park. Additional explorations by Wilson and others expanded the areas proposed size for the new national park. In 1961, Stewart Udall, the Secretary of the Interior at the time, flew over the area, which Wilson was proposing, the view sparked Udall's interest in the proposal and he began promoting the establishment of Canyon lands National Park. After several years of debate, President Lyndon B. Johnson established Canyon lands National Park as a new national park.
