1872 · The First National Park

Yellowstone National Park was given the title of the first national park by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant. It is also believed to be the first national park in the world.

1877 · The First Workers Strike

The country was in great economic distress in mid-1877, which caused many workers of the Railroad to come together and began the first national strike in the United States. Crowds gathered in Chicago in extreme number to be a part of the strike which was later named the Great Railroad Strike. Shortly after the strike began, the battle was fought between the authorities and many of the strikers. The conflict escalated to violence and quickly each side turned bloody.

1892 · The Chicago Canal

The Chicago River Canal was built as a sewage treatment scheme to help the city's drinking water not to get contaminated. While the Canal was being constructed the Chicago River's flow was reversed so it could be treated before draining back out into Lake Michigan.

Name Meaning

English (mainly Sussex): habitational name from Brent Pelham, Furneux Pelham, and Stocking Pelham in Hertfordshire, so called from the Old English personal name Pēola + hām ‘homestead’. Compare Pellham .

History: The manor of Pelham in Hertfordshire, England, was held by Walter de Pelham in the reign of Edward I (1272–1307). His descendants became constables of Pevensey Castle, Sussex, and were so influential that their badge, the buckle, is seen in at least eleven of the county's churches, and as a decoration on iron chimney-backs in Sussex farmhouses. Various branches of the family were ennobled and their titles include earl of Chichester and earl of Yarborough. The family also once held the dukedom of Newcastle and the marquessate of Clare. Peter Pelham (born c. 1695), an engraver, emigrated to Boston, MA, after 1728, and was stepfather to the artist John Singleton Copley.
