When Francois Haartsen was born on 5 April 1826, in Groede, Zeeland, Netherlands, his father, Adriaan Haartsen, was 36 and his mother, Janna van den Broeke, was 31. He married Suzanna Ekkebus on 25 June 1863, in IJzendijke, Zeeland, Netherlands. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 2 daughters. He died on 3 June 1908, in his hometown, at the age of 82.
