When Jan Slingerland was born on 13 October 1796, in Bleskensgraaf, South Holland, Netherlands, his father, Cornelis Slingerland, was 36 and his mother, Jannigje Beuzekom, was 37. He married Teuntje de Haan on 3 November 1824, in Nieuw-Lekkerland, South Holland, Netherlands. He died on 18 April 1849, in his hometown, at the age of 52.

In 1810, when Louis Bonaparte resigned from the throne, the Netherlands was annexed from the French. Finally in 1814, the Netherlands became sovereign and independent.
