When Thomas Jefferson Templeton was born in 1828, in Kentucky, United States, his father, George Madison Templeton Sr., was 19 and his mother, Jane Rumans, was 12. He married Nancy Jane Shickles on 16 August 1853, in Miller, Stoddard, Missouri, United States. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 3 daughters. He lived in Cole, Missouri, United States in 1850 and Moreau Township, Cole, Missouri, United States in 1860. He registered for military service in 1863. He died in 1881, in Missouri, United States, at the age of 53, and was buried in Olean, Miller, Missouri, United States.

1830 · The Second Great Awakening

Being a second spiritual and religious awakening, like the First Great Awakening, many Churches began to spring up from other denominations. Many people began to rapidly join the Baptist and Methodist congregations. Many converts to these religions believed that the Awakening was the precursor of a new millennial age.

1830 · Louisville and Portland Canal Opens

The Louisville and Portland canal opened in 1830. It was a 2 mile canal. It helped with the barrier caused by the Falls of the Ohio River at Louisville by making a route around them.

U.S. acquires vast tracts of Mexican territory in wake of Mexican War including California and New Mexico.

Name Meaning

Scottish: habitational name from a place near Dundonald in Ayrshire, so called from Middle English temple ‘house of the Knights Templar’ + toun ‘settlement’. There are also places called Templeton in Wales, Berkshire and Devon, but these do not seem to have contributed to the surname.
