Alternatively, from Middle English gaillard, galiard ‘brave, strong, valiant’, also ‘lively, gay, gaily dressed’.

Altered form of Gaylard, itself an Anglicized form of French Gaillard , which was brought to England by the Huguenots.

In some cases also an Americanized form of French Gaillard .
