He married Elizabeth Adriana Van Popering on 12 June 1868, in Oosterland, Zeeland, Netherlands. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 6 daughters. He died on 1 June 1915, in Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan, United States, at the age of 70, and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan, United States.
