Name Meaning

name of Germanic (Visigothic) origin , very common in the Middle Ages. It was not used in the English-speaking world until the 19th century, when it was made familiar as the name of the long-suffering wife of Don Juan , both in Mozart's opera Don Giovanni ( 1789 ) and in Byron's satirical epic poem Don Juan ( 1819–24 ). In his comedy Blithe Spirit Noel Coward used it as the name of Charles Condomine's first wife, who returns to haunt him. It is also the name of the heroine of the Swedish film Elvira Madigan ( 1967 ), directed by Bo Widerberg , a romantic tragedy about a pair of lovers who would rather die than be separated.
