The Westmorland placename may derive from Old English hwearf ‘embankment, shore, wharf’ + tūn.perhaps occasionally a habitational name from Wiverton in Nottinghamshire, derived from the Old English personal name Wīgfrith + Old English tūn ‘farmstead, estate’.
