In 1860, at the age of 42, his occupation is listed as shoemaker in Greenwood Township, Crawford, Pennsylvania, United States. He died on 22 January 1907, in Riley Township, Putnam, Ohio, United States, at the age of 88, and was buried in Pandora, Putnam, Ohio, United States.

Possibly also an Americanized form of German Deis or of its Dutch variants Dijs and Deijs; compare Dyes .
