When Elsbeth Frehner was born on 14 June 1767, in Urnäsch, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland, her father, Ulrich Frener, was 39 and her mother, Anna Ammann, was 33. She married Hans Konrad Alder on 4 November 1791, in Urnäsch, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 3 daughters. She died on 25 October 1852, in her hometown, at the age of 85, and was buried in Urnäsch, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland.

South German and Swiss German: metronymic from the female personal name Frene or an occupational name meaning ‘bondsman of a woman called Frene’. The name is testified in old documents as the name of Saint Verena of Zurzach in Aargau, Switzerland.
