    1838 · Florida Constitutional Convention of 1838

    Age 1

    In order to transition from a territory into a state, Florida held a Constitutional Convention on December 3, 1838 at St. Joseph. The original constitutional document has never been found, but a handwritten copy exists which shows the signatures of Robert Raymond Reid (Convention President) and Joshua Knowles (Convention Secretary). There were an estimated 55 delegates in attendance. Most of the debate was centered on the topic of banking.

    1838 · Orders No. 25 Removes Cherokees

    Age 1

    A small group of Cherokees from Georgia voluntarily migrated to the Indian Territory. The remaining Cherokees in Georgia resisted the mounting pressure to leave. In 1838, U.S. President Martin Van Buren ordered U.S. troops to remove the Cherokee Nation. The troops gathered the Cherokees and marched them and other Native Americans from North Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama along what is now known as “The Trail of Tears.” Approximately 5,000 Cherokees died on their way to Indian Territory.
