Brief Life History of Jens

When Jens Nielsen was born on 30 September 1829, in Vadum, Ålborghus, Denmark, his father, Niels Jensen Leed, was 58 and his mother, Mariane Andersdatter, was 33. He married Johanne Maria Larsen on 26 December 1851. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 4 daughters. He lived in Vadum, Kær, Ålborg, Denmark in 1840 and Jetsmark, Hvetbo, Hjørring, Denmark for about 10 years. He died on 19 November 1901, at the age of 72, and was buried in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.

1834 · The United Tribes of New Zealand Flag

A confederation of Maori tribes was convened in 1834 by James Busby, a British Resident who had been sent to New Zealand to set up a framework for trade between the Māori and Europeans. The Flag which they used was a mix between the St. George’s Cross and in the top left corner another smaller St. Georges Cross with four eight pointed stars representing the Holy Cross stars in the Southern Hemisphere. This design is still being used today as the official flag of the United Tribes of New Zealand.

1847 · Casino Theatre (Copenhagen)

The Casino Theatre was built as an entertainment center by Georg Carstensen but was converted into a theatre in 1848. After many years of never gaining popularity, it was closed in 1937 and demolished in 1960.

Denmark becomes a constitutional monarchy. A two-chamber parliament is established.
