When Johannes Schmutz was born in 1792, in Vechigen, Bern, Switzerland, his father, Christen Schmutz, was 28 and his mother, Anna Barbara Geriger Schmutz, was 29. He married Christina Läderach on 14 July 1825, in Münsingen, Bern, Switzerland. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 6 daughters. He died on 21 November 1857, in his hometown, at the age of 65, and was buried in Vechigen, Bern, Switzerland.
