    The construction of the National Library of Mexico came by decree of Benito Juarez in 1867 to become a bibliographic repository of Mexico and home to all foreign books published about Mexico. It was linked to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) for research and to help students learn more about Mexico. The building was damaged after an earthquake in 1985 and a new annex was built to help preserve the books that weren’t destroyed.
