    Name Meaning

    English: habitational name from any of various places so called, including Stockbridge (Hampshire), Stockbridge in Chichester (Sussex), Stockbridge in Bentley (Yorkshire), Stock Bridge in Brantingham (East Yorkshire), and Stockbridge in Chiseldon (Wiltshire), all named with Old English stocc ‘tree trunk, stump’ or stoccen ‘made of logs’ + brycg ‘bridge’.

    History: John Stockbridge emigrated from England c. 1635 and settled in Scituate, MA. He had many prominent descendants.
