He married Geneva Estella Knapp on 19 June 1881, in Patoka, Marion, Illinois, United States. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 5 daughters. He lived in Marlborough, Jackson, Missouri, United States in 1940 and Mission, North Benton Township, Polk, Missouri, United States in 1944. He died on 13 January 1944, in Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri, United States, at the age of 86, and was buried in Springfield, Sangamon, Illinois, United States.

Abraham Lincoln's goal was to be different than the previous Senators of Illinois and voice his opinion in how he saw the State and the United States start to drift apart in the different ideology on what was right and what was wrong. Even though it would become an unsuccessful campaign strategy to win the senate seat, to this day it is one of the most famous speeches of US politics.

1881 · The Assassination of James Garfield
Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.
