When Calvin Owings was born in February 1828, in Kentucky, United States, his father, William H Owings, was 18 and his mother, Esther Hannah Johnson, was 20. He married Sarah Ann Guinn on 26 June 1879, in Redding, Shasta, California, United States. He lived in Judicial Township 7, Shasta, California, United States in 1880 and Redding, Shasta, California, United States in 1900. He died on 8 January 1908, in Shasta, California, United States, at the age of 79, and was buried in Redding Memorial Park, Redding, Shasta, California, United States.

1830 · Louisville and Portland Canal Opens

The Louisville and Portland canal opened in 1830. It was a 2 mile canal. It helped with the barrier caused by the Falls of the Ohio River at Louisville by making a route around them.

1848 · The California Gold Rush

On January 24, 1848, gold was found at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, California, which began the California gold rush. In December of that same year, U.S. President James Polk announced the news to Congress. The news of gold lured thousands of “forty-niners” seeking fortune to California during 1849. Approximately 300,000 people relocated to California from all over the world during the gold rush years. It is estimated that the mined gold was worth tens of billions in today’s U.S. dollars. 

1850 · California Is Admitted to Union

California was admitted into the Union on September 9, 1850, and became the 31st state.
