1881 · The Assassination of James Garfield

Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.

Americanized form of German Grassmeyer (or of any of its like-sounding cognates): distinguishing name for a tenant farmer (see Meyer ) who lived by a meadow or, in some cases, was in charge of the communal meadows, from Middle High German gras ‘grass, pasture’. The surname Grassmeyer is very rare in Germany.
