1856 · The Town of Santa Claus

Age 2

The town of Santa Fe was denied their application for a United States Postal Service as a town of Santa Fe, Indiana, was already established. Several meetings were held and the name was changed to Santa Claus, Indiana. The United States Postal Service granted their application. Due to the name, the post office in Santa Claus continues to receive thousands of letters to Santa Claus from children around the world each December.

1906 · Gary, Indiana, Is Founded

The town of Gary, Indiana, was founded by the United States Steel Corporation in 1906. The Gary Works steel mill was the largest integrated mill in North America. The city of Gary was named after Elbert Henry Gary who was the founding chairman of the United States Steel Corporation and American lawyer and county judge. Gary partnered with J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, and Charles M. Schwab to found the United States Steel Corporation.
