He married Elise Césarine Joséphine Woyolle on 21 May 1904, in Rouvroy, Pas-de-Calais, France. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 2 daughters. He lived in Gillespie, Macoupin, Illinois, United States in 1910 and Findlay Township, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, United States in 1920. He died on 7 February 1953, in Lake City, Columbia, Florida, United States, at the age of 75.

The Episcopal Diocese of Florida organized a mission church in 1878 to provide a location that could serve seasonal guests. Visitors and residents from Green Cove Springs raised over $1000 to build the church. On March 10, 1879, the Church held its first service. This location is notable because it would eventually be added to U.S. National Register of Historic Places (February 17, 1978).
Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.
Florida played a critical role during the Spanish-American War. The port of Tampa saw the arrival of over 30,000 troops; this traffic resulted in the small town experiencing massive growth and becoming a city. Cuban-Americans across the state also helped with raising money and support for the war.
