GREENSPOND An island on the north of Bonavista Bay, district of Bonavista. The island is so thoroughly barren that soil for house gardens had to be brought from the main land. This is a good fishing station and a large business is done here. The harbor is safe but small. During the time of the spring seal fishery great numbers of seals are often washed upon the shore. It is a post town and port of entry. Distant from St. John's by overland route, weekly 183 miles, and by steamer fortnightly 100 miles. Fare $6.00. Mail fortnightly. Population 1073.

Nearest railway station, Gambo, 35 miles by water; coastal mail steamers call fortnightly during summer from St. John's, 148 miles, fares $6.00 and $3.00; winter mails from St. John's weekly by rail and courier. Contains some large fishing establishments, 15 stores, 4 halls, 1 hotel, custom house and gaol, 3 churches and several schools. Population 1,320.

English: alternatively, a topographic name for someone who lived ‘(by the) borough enclosure’, Middle English bur(g)h + hei(e), hai(e) (Old English burg ‘borough’+ (ge)hæg ‘enclosure’).

Swiss German: variant of Burri and, in North America, (also) an altered form of this or of the variant Buri . The surname Burry is very rare in Switzerland.
