When Charles Cheney was born on 28 November 1818, in Guildhall, Essex, Vermont, United States, his father, Henry Cheney, was 37 and his mother, Patience Fuller, was 31. He married Eleanor Barrows on 22 February 1841, in Granby, Essex, Vermont, United States. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 7 daughters. He lived in Lunenburg, Essex, Vermont, United States in 1880 and Auburn, Androscoggin, Maine, United States in 1900. He died on 25 August 1900, in Randolph, Coos, New Hampshire, United States, at the age of 81, and was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Lunenburg, Essex, Vermont, United States.

French Canadian: altered form of French Chesnay or Chenay, topographic names with the same meaning and etymology as in 2 above, or habitational names from (Le) Chesnay or (Le) Chenay, names of several places in the northwestern part of France, based on Old French chesnai ‘oak grove’.
