When Samuel Mathis was born on 27 November 1820, in Union, Kentucky, United States, his father, James Martin Mathis, was 46 and his mother, Elizabeth "Betsy" "Mina" Hooper, was 45. He married Elizabeth Ann Ray on 5 January 1844, in Marshall, Kentucky, United States. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 4 daughters. He registered for military service in 1862. He died on 17 October 1874, in Marshall, Kentucky, United States, at the age of 53, and was buried in Marshall, Kentucky, United States.

1821 · Financial Relief for Public Land

A United States law to provide financial relief for the purchasers of Public Lands. It permitted the earlier buyers, that couldn't pay completely for the land, to return the land back to the government. This granted them a credit towards the debt they had on land. Congress, also, extended credit to buyer for eight more years. Still while being in economic panic and the shortage of currency made by citizens, the government hoped that with the time extension, the economy would improve.

1830 · Louisville and Portland Canal Opens

The Louisville and Portland canal opened in 1830. It was a 2 mile canal. It helped with the barrier caused by the Falls of the Ohio River at Louisville by making a route around them.

1836 · Remember the Alamo

Being a monumental event in the Texas Revolution, The Battle of the Alamo was a thirteen-day battle at the Alamo Mission near San Antonio. In the early morning of the final battle, the Mexican Army advanced on the Alamo. Quickly being overrun, the Texian Soldiers quickly withdrew inside the building. The battle has often been overshadowed by events from the Mexican–American War, But the Alamo gradually became known as a national battle site and later named an official Texas State Shrine.
