King William I of the Netherlands established the Netherlands Trading Society (a successor to the Dutch East India Company) to revive the trade between the Netherlands and the Netherlands East Indies. The institution was headquartered in Amsterdam.

1838 · Natura Artis Magistra (Zoo)

The Natura Artis Magistra, also known as Artis, is the oldest Zoo in the Netherlands and among the oldest zoos in all of Europe. It is located in the center of Amsterdam. Gerard Westerman, J.W.H. Werlemann and J.J. Wijsmuller founded the Zoo in 1838, where it was initially open only to members. The zoo would become public in 1851. In addition to the typical Zoo fare, Artis also contains an aquarium, planetarium, arboretum, and a sizeable collection of art.
