When Tasi Ah Kan was born in 1951, in Fagali'i, Tuamasaga, Upolu, Samoa, his father, Palea Masagamaleao Ah Kan, was 51 and his mother, Vaimoe Upu Esekielu, was 27. He died on 28 January 1978, in Māngere, Auckland, New Zealand, at the age of 27, and was buried in Māngere, Auckland, New Zealand.

The Antarctic Treaty was signed by Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, France, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States, because of their interests in Antarctica at the time, to establish Antarctica as a scientific preserve and to ban any military activity on the continent. This treaty was the first arms control agreement established during the Cold War and is still in effect today.
