When Johannes Witzig was born on 9 November 1788, in Zürich, Switzerland, his father, Hans Ulrich Witzig, was 39 and his mother, Lisbeth Spiess, was 39. He married Magdalena Eggli on 7 November 1811, in Laufen, Dachsen, Zürich, Switzerland. They were the parents of at least 4 sons. He died on 9 March 1852, at the age of 63, and was buried in Switzerland.
