When Sarah Rittenhouse was born on 1 November 1867, in Prairie Du Long Township, St. Clair, Illinois, United States, her father, Nelson Rittenhouse, was 29 and her mother, Lavinia Carr, was 27. She lived in Austin Township, Van Buren, Missouri, United States in 1870 and Lake Township, Clinton, Illinois, United States in 1880. She died on 15 September 1888, in Illinois, United States, at the age of 20, and was buried in Macon, Macon, Illinois, United States.

1868 · Impeach the President!

Caused by many crimes and breaking the Tenure of Office Act, Many Senators and House Representatives became angry with President Johnson and began discussions of his Impeachment. After a special session of Congress, the Articles of Impeachment were approved by the House and then the Senate. Making Andrew Johnson the first President to be Impeached.

1871

In 1871, a cow kicked over a lantern, causing a fire that burned down half of Chicago. Today this city is the third largest in the US.

1875 · A Treaty with Hawaii

In the Mid 1870s, The United States sought out the Kingdom of Hawaii to make a free trade agreement. The Treaty gave the Hawaiians access to the United States agricultural markets and it gave the United States a part of land which later became Pearl Harbor.

Name Meaning

Americanized form of German Rittinghaus: habitational name from a farm near Altena, Westphalia.

History: William Rittenhouse (1644–1708) was the first Mennonite preacher in North America. He was born in the Rhineland, Prussia (Germany) and worked as a papermaker in Amsterdam, emigrating to PA in 1688 and establishing the first paper mill in America. His great-grandson David Rittenhouse (1732–96) of Philadelphia was an astronomer and the first director of the United States Mint.
