1848 · Slavery is Abolished

Age 7

In 1840, the American Anti-Slavery Society split and slavery started being outlawed in the state. In Canterbury, Connecticut, Prudence Crandall started a school for young African American girls. The people got mad and Crandall was taken to court. The case was lost and that was the beginning of many other cases that would be lost, but it was also the start of having slavery abolished.

1862 · Battle of Shiloh

Age 21

The battle of Shiloh took place on April 6, 1862 and April 7, 1862. Confederate soldiers camp through the woods next to where the Union soldiers were camped at Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River. With 23,000 casualties this was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War up to this point.

Andrew Johnson (1808–75), 17th president of the US, was born in Raleigh, NC, the younger son of Jacob Johnson and Mary (or Polly) McDonough. Little is known of his ancestors. The 36th president, Lyndon B. Johnson, dates his American forebears back seven generations to James Johnston (sic) (born c. 1662) who lived at Currowaugh, Nansemond, and Isle of Wight counties, VA. — Noted early bearers also include Marmaduke Johnson (died 1674), a printer who came from England to MA in 1660; Edward Johnson (1598–1672), a colonial chronicler who was baptized at St. George's parish, Canterbury, England, and emigrated to Boston in 1630; and Sir Nathaniel Johnson (c. 1645–1713), a colonial governor of Carolina, who came from County Durham, England.
