When Opetaia Gagai Allen was born on 19 December 1939, in Matatufu, Atua, Upolu, Samoa, his father, Nai Fereti Allen, was 26 and his mother, Saifunae Loli Tomui Timaloa, was 14. He died on 4 September 2005, in Auckland, New Zealand, at the age of 65, and was buried in Auckland, New Zealand.

    1943 · Eleanor Roosevelt Visits During War

    Anna Eleanor Roosevelt visited New Zealand during the calmer years of World War II in the Pacific. It was the first time that a first lady of the United States had visited the country alone without their husband.

    New Zealand gains full independence from Britain.

    1957 · Scott Base

    The New Zealand Antarctic research facility at Pram Point was given the name Scott Base in honor of Captain Robert Falcon Scott. It was set up to support field research and has become a center of research into earth sciences.
